Oceania is one of the seven continents of the world. This continent is also referred to as ‘Australia Continent’ in majority of the English-speaking countries. It is the smallest continent in the world by land area.

This continent is quite less talked about compared to other continents when it comes to geopolitics. There are a number of island regions in this continent which sometimes can be confusing. Here we will get to know all the countries and territories in this continent.

List of Countries in Oceania

There are exactly 14 countries in the Oceania continent which are even the members of the United Nations. While, there can be two additions, namely, Niue and Cook Islands which identify as independent countries but their citizens are referred as New Zealanders as New Zealand is responsible to manage their defense, finances, foreign relations and so on. Hence, we usually don’t count these two nations in the list of countries.

2. Palau

Palau is a country made up of about 340 islands. With the capital of Ngerulmud, this country has United States Dollar (USD) as its official currency. The country got a population of roughly 18,000.

3. Federated States of Micronesia

Federated States of Micronesia is a country made up of 607 islands. With the capital of Palikir, this country has United States Dollar (USD) as its official currency. The country got a population of roughly 114,000.

4. Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is a country located in South-East Pacific region. With the capital of Port Moresbay, this country has Papua New Guinean Kina (PGK) as its official currency which equals to $0.3 USD roughly in October 2023. It has a population of roughly 100,00,000.

5. Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands is a country made up of 992 islands. With the capital of Honiara, this country has Papua Solomon Islands Dollar (SGD) as its official currency which equals to $0.1 USD roughly in October 2023. It has a population of roughly 7,40,000.

6. Marshall Islands

Marshall Islands is a country made up of 1225 islands. With the capital of Majuro, this country has United States Dollar (USD) as its official currency. It has a population of roughly 42,000.

7. Vanuatu

Vanuatu is a country made up of 992 islands. With the capital of Port Vila, this country has Papua Vanuatu Vatu (VUV) as its official currency which equals to $0.001 USD roughly in October 2023. It has a population of roughly 335,000.

8. Nauru

Nauru is a country made up of a single island. It is the smallest country in the continent, third smallest country in the world and smallest island nation in the world. With the capital of Yaren, this country has Australian Dollar (AUD) as its official currency which equals to $0.65 USD roughly in October 2023. It has a population of roughly 13,000.

9. New Zealand

New Zealand is the biggest country of the continent. It has a population of more than 52,00,000 as of 2023. The currency, New Zealand Dollar (AUD) equals to roughly $0.6 (USD) in October 2023.

10. Kiribati

Kiribati is a country made up of 33 islands. With the capital of Tawara, this country has two official currencies, Australian Dollar (AUD) which equals to $0.65 USD roughly and Kiribati Dollar (KID) which always equals to Australian Dollar (AUD) as both the currencies are tied. It has a population of roughly 130,000.

13. Tonga

14. Samoa

Samoa is a country made up of 9 islands. With the capital of Apia, this country has Samoan Tala (TOP) as its official currency which equals to $0.4 USD roughly in October 2023. It has a population of roughly 225,000.
