Monkeypox: Another health emergency after Coronavirus

Introduction

Monkeypox is a viral disease. World Health Organization has declared this communicable disease, ‘Monkey Pox’ as a global health emergency amid the rising cases and threats. It further declares its highest alert.

Cases

According to ‘Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’, more than 17,000 cases have been reported in the world as of July 2022. While, India reports about 5 cases as of July 2022.

Origin

Monkeypox is noted to be originated from Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970 where first case was ever recorded was with a 9-month year old boy. This virus started to spread again in 2022 with an individual found infected with this virus in United Kingdom who had a travel history of Nigeria.

Spread

This is a ‘viral’ disease which can spread through physical touch, sweat, saliva and respiratory secretions.

Vaccination

As of now, there is no specific or exclusive vaccine for this disease (like we have specific Covishield or Covaxin for Coronavirus). Though, it is reported that the same vaccines which we use for ‘smallpox’ disease can be used for Monkeypox as well. Many countries are arranging the vaccines for the same.
